En fast datumregel anger att övergången sker samma datum och tid varje år som justeringsregeln gäller för. En tidsändring som inträffar varje 3 november följer till exempel en fast datumregel. En flyttalsregel anger att övergången sker en viss dag i en viss vecka i en viss månad för varje år som justeringsregeln gäller för. En tidsändring som inträffar den första söndagen i november följer till exempel en regel för flytande datum.
