Med automatisk privat IP-adressering kan datorer som inte har åtkomst till en DHCP-server (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) automatiskt tilldelas en IP-adress som inte står i konflikt med offentliga adresser. Dessa adresser finns i intervallet 169.254.0.0 till 169.254.255.255.
