Overview of Surface Diagnostic Toolkit for Business

Specifically, SDT for Business enables you to:

  • Customize the package.

  • Run the app using commands.

  • Run multiple hardware tests to troubleshoot issues.

  • Generate logs for analyzing issues.

  • Obtain a detailed report comparing device vs. optimal configuration.

Setup and configuration

SDT for Business is supported on Surface 3 and later devices (except for devices configured in S mode):

  • Surface Book - all generations

  • Surface Laptop Studio - all generations

  • Surface Go - all generations

  • Surface Laptop - all generations

  • Surface Laptop Go - all generations

  • Surface Pro 3 and later

  • Surface Pro X - all generations

  • Surface Studio - all generations

  • Surface 3 LTE

How to install the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit for Business

  1. Sign in to your Surface device using the Administrator account.

  2. Download SDT Windows Installer Package (.msi) from the Surface Tools for IT download page.

    • For Intel/AMD devices, download: Surface_Diagnostic_Toolkit_for_Business_v2.193.139.0.msi.

    • For Azure Resource Manager devices, download: Surface_Diagnostic_Toolkit_for_Business_v2.193.139.0_x86.msi.

  3. Copy the .msi file to a preferred location on your Surface device, such as Desktop. The SDT setup wizard appears, as shown in the figure below. Select Next. Screenshot of the SDT wizard.

  4. When the SDT setup wizard appears, select Next, and accept the End User License Agreement (EULA).

  5. On the Install Options screen, change the default install location if desired.

  6. Under Setup Type, select Advanced.

When setting up SDT on your device, you'll be prompted to set the following:

  1. Language and Telemetry: When crafting a package, you have the option to configure language settings and decide whether to share telemetry data with Microsoft. By default, the Surface Diagnostic Toolkit (SDT) is set to send telemetry information to Microsoft, aiding in the enhancement of the application in line with the Microsoft Privacy Statement. If you prefer not to participate, you can deselect the option by unchecking the box during the custom package creation process, as illustrated below. Alternatively, you can opt out by unchecking the Send telemetry to Microsoft box on the Install Options page while setting up SDT.

This allows you to customize the package creation to suit your privacy preferences regarding telemetry data sharing.

  1. Windows Update page: Choose the update reception option that aligns with your organization's needs. For organizations with numerous users, the common choice is to receive updates through Windows Server Update Services (WSUS). If opting for local Windows Update packages or WSUS, specify the path accordingly.

This selection ensures that your organization's devices receive updates in the most efficient manner suited to your infrastructure.

  1. Software repair page: This allows you to select or remove the option to run software repair updates.

  2. Log collector page: You can select to run a wide range of logs across applications, drivers, hardware, and the operating system. Select the appropriate area and select from the menu of available logs. You can then save the package to a software distribution point or equivalent location that users can access.
