    Dear @raghav,

Thank you for reaching out, and I am sorry for the inconvenience you’re experiencing with Microsoft Teams.

    1. To better understand and assist with this issue, could you please clarify whether the entire Chat section is completely missing, or if only some chats are not showing, or if there is a specific chat or conversation you are unable to find?
    2. Additionally, please let me know if you notice any error messages or warnings in Teams. If possible, I kindly ask that you share a screenshot showing what you see in the Teams interface.
    3. Please also confirm whether you are using a work or school account, or a personal Microsoft account?
    4. Which device or platform the issue occurs on (desktop app, web version, mobile app, or all of them).
    5. Lastly, could you provide your Microsoft Teams version, Microsoft 365 license type, and the operating system you are using?

Note: If none of the above solutions work, let me know for further investigation. Please note that our initial response does not always resolve the issue immediately. However, with your help and more detailed information, we can work together to find a solution.

With these details, I’ll be able to investigate further and provide the most appropriate support.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding. I am looking forward to your response!

In Microsoft Teams, the Chats section can be missing or unusable for several reasons that cannot be fixed from the Settings menu by the end user.

For business/education accounts, the most common causes are:

    1. Chat disabled by policy (private chat turned off)
      • The organization’s IT administrator can disable private chat for users (often in schools or tightly controlled environments).
      • When private chat is disabled, the Chat area can be hidden or unusable, and there is no toggle in personal Settings to turn it back on.
      • In this case, communication must be done in Teams channels instead (for example, posting in a channel and @mentioning people).
    2. Limited or supervised chat permissions
      • The administrator can give limited or restricted chat permissions (for example, supervised chat for students).
      • This can prevent starting new chats or make the Chat section appear very limited, again without any user‑side setting to change it.

To resolve this, contact the organization’s IT administrator or helpdesk and ask them to check:

    • Whether private chat is disabled for the account.
    • Whether limited/supervised chat policies are applied that hide or restrict Chat.

If using Teams for Education and chat used to work but suddenly stopped, also ensure the Teams app is updated and try the standard chat troubleshooting steps (restart Teams, check connectivity, try the web version, sign out and back in). If it still does not appear, it is almost certainly controlled by admin policy.
