My volume is stuck on mute. When I push it to higher volume it just slides back to mute. And I have what seems to be a permanent volume slider at the bottom of the window.

Use these steps in order, testing the volume after each.

    1. Check Volume mixer levels
      1. Select Start > Settings > System > Sound.
      2. Select Volume mixer.
      3. Make sure the sliders for System and any apps in use are turned up and not muted.
    2. Turn off audio enhancements
      1. In Settings > System > Sound, under Output, select the current audio device (speakers/headphones).
      2. Select Audio enhancements.
      3. Turn enhancements Off and test sound.
    3. Change the audio format
      1. Still under Output, select the same audio device.
      2. Select Advanced.
      3. Under Default format, choose a different format and test audio.
    4. Verify sound settings from the taskbar
      1. Right-click the Speakers icon on the taskbar.
      2. Select the arrow next to the volume slider and confirm the correct sound output device is selected.
      3. Select the More mixer settings (settings icon) and confirm nothing is muted and all required devices are enabled.
    5. Reinstall or update the audio driver
      1. Press Win + X and select Device Manager.
      2. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
      3. Right-click the audio device (for example, Realtek or similar) and select Uninstall device.
      4. Check Delete the driver software if available, then restart the PC.
      5. After restart, go to Settings > Windows Update and install all updates, including Optional updates.
    6. Restart audio services
      1. Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
      2. Find Windows Audio and Windows Audio Endpoint Builder.
      3. Right-click each, select Restart, and ensure Startup type is set to Automatic.

If the slider still snaps back to mute after these steps, repeat the driver reinstall and confirm that no third-party audio control app is forcing mute.
