I retired from [Moderator note: personal info removed] in 2022. Business has not been active since 2022. In January 2026 I received a bill on my Capital One Charge Card for $638.72 with no explanation.

    Dear @Melvin Kalish,

I completely understand how concerning it must be to see a charge from Microsoft in January 2026, especially when your business has been inactive since 2022.

In situations like this, it is possible that the charge might be related to a Microsoft subscription (such as Microsoft 365 for business email or Office services) that may still be active under a Microsoft tenant created for your organization in the past. These subscriptions can continue to renew automatically if recurring billing was not explicitly canceled within the Microsoft admin portal.

In this case, since cancel subscription and refund request things need action/approval from Billing team, so you have to raise the support ticket to the correct Billing Team.

Since this appears to be tied to a business‑type subscription and you may no longer have access to the original Microsoft 365 admin account used for your firm, I would recommend you create a Microsoft 365 trial tenant to contact the support team online.

Step 1: Sign up for a new Microsoft 365 Business trial using this link: Compare All Microsoft 365 Plans. You will need to use a different, personal email address to register.

Step 2: Once the trial account is created, log in to its Admin Center > From the Admin Center, open a new Service Request. For reference:  Get support | Microsoft Docs

Step 3: In the ticket description, explain that you card is charged and that you need to speak with the Billing team to cancel subscription. Provide your good contact number for them to reach you.

Additionally, to help Microsoft Billing Support investigate this charge more efficiently, please prepare the following information in advance:

    • The date of the transaction
    • The exact amount charged
    • The last four digits of your credit card used for the transaction
    • The merchant description shown on your statement (for example: “MICROSOFT”, “MSFT”, or “MSBILL.INFO”)
    • Any invoice, receipt, or reference number shown on the credit card transaction

Important: Please remember to cancel the trial subscription after your original account issue is resolved to avoid any future charges.

Note: Please understand that as a forum moderator, my role is to provide general guidance and troubleshooting support. I don’t have access to internal systems or backend tools, and I appreciate your understanding of these limits.

I hope the information shared helps point you in the right direction. Please try the steps above and let me know if they work. If not, we can continue working together to narrow this down.

The first response may not always resolve the issue right away, but with your help and more details, we can work toward a solution.

Thank you for your patience and understanding. I'm looking forward for your reply.

The charge is most likely related to an active Microsoft subscription or order still associated with a Microsoft account for the law office, or to an unrecognized/unauthorized purchase. To understand and dispute it, follow these steps:

    1. Investigate the charge in the Microsoft account dashboard
      1. Go to the Manage your payments page of the Microsoft account dashboard: https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=2246882.
      2. Locate the payment method that matches the Capital One card.
      3. Select Investigate next to the unrecognized charge and follow the guided steps. This helps identify whether it is:
        • A Microsoft 365 or other subscription with recurring billing enabled.
        • A purchase made by someone else using that account or card.
        • A previously declined charge that was reprocessed.
        • A pre-order or split order that has just been billed.
    2. Check for still‑active subscriptions
      1. Sign in to https://account.microsoft.com/services with any Microsoft account that may have been used for the law office.
      2. Look for any subscriptions (for example, Microsoft 365) that still show as Active or with a future renewal date.
      3. If a subscription is found and is no longer needed, follow the Cancel your Microsoft subscription link from the order history or subscriptions page to stop future charges. Note that cancellations must be more than 2 days before the billing date; otherwise, one more charge can occur even after cancellation.
    3. Review Microsoft Store order history and invoices
      1. Go to the order history page at https://account.microsoft.com/billing/orders.
      2. Ensure the correct Microsoft account is used (personal vs. any account that might have been tied to the law office).
      3. Under Payment & billing > Order history, refine by date to include January 2026.
      4. Look for any orders with status Completed or Redeemed that match $638.72.
      5. Select Order details on any matching order to see what was purchased and to print or download an invoice if needed.
    4. If the charge is accidental or unauthorized
      • For accidental or unauthorized purchases, use the refund process described in Returning items you bought from Microsoft for exchange or refund (linked from the order history and cancellation articles) to request a refund.
      • If there are duplicate charges for the same order, contact Microsoft Store Support as described in the Cancel an order or pre-order from Microsoft Store article.
    5. If the charge does not appear in any Microsoft account
      • If, after checking all possible Microsoft accounts and using Manage your payments → Investigate, the charge does not appear, treat it as potentially fraudulent use of the card.
      • Work with Capital One to dispute the transaction and, in parallel, follow Microsoft’s guidance on compromised accounts if there is any sign that a Microsoft account was accessed without authorization.

These steps will either identify the specific subscription/order that generated the $638.72 charge or provide the basis to cancel it and request a refund or dispute.
