On windows 10, in file explorer, there was a user interface GUI to search for files modified on a specific date or range of dates. How do I get that functionality in Windows 11 without typing in some hard to remember search string?

    Hello Robert,

    Thank you for posting question on Microsoft Windows Forum!

    Based on your query of searching on Windows 11 for files modified on a specific date or range of dates. Well! In Windows 11, the user interface for filtering by date has been tucked away into the new Command Bar (the toolbar at the top of the window). The following are two methods to access a GUI for date filtering without typing search strings.

    • You can use the "Search Options" Dropdown by opening File Explorer and navigate to the folder you want to search. Click inside the Search Box in the top-right corner. This "activates" search mode. Then looking at the Command Bar at the top. A new button labeled Search options (sometimes just an icon that looks like a list with a small gear or magnifying glass) will appear. Click Search options > Date modified. Select your desired range (such as Today, Last week, This year). This method is the closest replacement for the Windows 10 "Search" tab.
    • If you need a specific date or a custom range using a calendar GUI—rather than just the presets. You can use the "Details View" Filter. Set your folder view to Details (View > Show > Details). Find the Date modified column header. Click the small downward arrow (chevron) on the right side of the "Date modified" text. A calendar GUI will pop up. To select one date -> just click it. To select a range -> Click a start date and drag your mouse to the end date, or hold Shift while clicking the start and end dates.

    Probably the best solution would be for Microsoft to keep supporting Windows 10 if they are insisting on taking away functionality in Windows 11.

    Hi Robert,

    In the gui options there are only a few options, but no explicit custom date

    User's image

    the 'hard to remember' string would be

    on date:

    datemodified:=2026-03-01

    before date:

    datemodified:<=2026-03-01

    for a date range:

    datemodified:=2026-03-01..2026-03-28

    hope this helps,
