For each computer, Windows must be activated with either a valid product key or a digital license that matches the edition installed (for example, Windows 10 Home vs Pro). There is no single free key that can be used to activate many school PCs.
Key points and options:
- One key per license
- A normal (retail/OEM) Windows product key can only be used on the number of devices allowed by the Microsoft Software License Terms (typically one PC per license).
- If one copy of Windows is installed on multiple PCs using the same key, activation will fail once the allowed limit is exceeded. In that case, new product keys or additional Windows licenses are required for the extra PCs.
- Pre‑installed (OEM) PCs
- If the school bought PCs with Windows already installed, each PC normally has its own license (often embedded in firmware or on a sticker/COA from the vendor).
- If activation fails on such PCs, it may mean the same key was used on more devices than allowed, or a different edition of Windows was installed during repair. Reinstalling the original edition and using the original key/media from the vendor is required.
- Volume licensing for many school computers
- For managing many lab PCs, schools typically use volume licensing (for example, Multiple Activation Key or KMS) purchased through official Microsoft education/volume licensing channels.
- These volume keys are sold to organizations and must not be bought from unofficial third‑party resellers. Using volume keys that were resold to consumers violates licensing terms and can lead to activation being blocked.
- When activation fails
- If Windows shows that it cannot be activated, check whether:
- The product key has already been used on more PCs than allowed.
- A different edition of Windows was installed than the one the key is for.
- The copy of Windows or the key is counterfeit or from an unauthorized reseller.
- If counterfeit or misused keys are involved, new genuine Windows licenses must be purchased.
- If Windows shows that it cannot be activated, check whether:
- How to proceed in a school environment
- Work with the school administration or IT department to:
- Identify how the existing PCs were licensed (OEM from the PC vendor, retail keys, or volume licensing).
- Collect any original documentation, COA stickers, or invoices that show Windows licenses.
- If there are not enough valid licenses for all lab PCs, purchase additional Windows licenses through official Microsoft education or volume licensing channels.
- Work with the school administration or IT department to:
There is no supported way to generate or bypass product keys. Each lab computer must be covered by a genuine Windows license and activated with a matching key or digital license.
