Am I correct that I can have Word, Excel, etc through Microsoft 365 on a MacBook Pro laptop? I am new to Mac and I thought it is possible, however, when I register a new device it doesn't accept the serial number and I don't see a Mac option.

thank you,

Kim

What you probably are seeing is for registering Microsoft products [Xbox, Surface tablets, keyboards & other accessories] for warranty purposes. It isn't for registering products from other vendors.

Yes, Word, Excel, Outlook, and the other Microsoft 365 apps can be installed and used on a MacBook Pro.

    Key points for Mac:

    1. Microsoft 365 works on Mac
      • Microsoft 365 subscriptions and Office 2024 can be installed on either Mac or PC.
      • The latest Office apps for Mac (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) are fully supported on macOS when installed and activated correctly.
    2. No need to “register” the Mac with a serial number
      • Installing Microsoft 365 on a Mac does not use the Mac’s hardware serial number.
      • Instead, activation is done by signing in with the Microsoft account that has the Microsoft 365 subscription.
    3. How to install and activate on a MacBook Pro
      • First redeem and install Microsoft 365/Office on the Mac: follow the steps in Download, install, or reinstall Microsoft 365 or Office 2024 on a PC or Mac.
      • On the Mac, open an app such as Word.
      • In the “Sign in to activate Office” screen, sign in with the email address and password associated with the Microsoft 365 subscription.
      • Office checks for a valid license and then activates; after that, Word, Excel, etc. can be used normally.
    4. If using the Mac App Store
      • Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook from the Mac App Store require a Microsoft 365 subscription to create and edit documents.
      • One-time (perpetual) Office licenses such as Office 2019/2016 are not compatible with apps downloaded from the Mac App Store; those require Office apps downloaded directly from Microsoft instead.

There is no separate “Mac option” or Mac serial-number registration step for Microsoft 365; installation and activation are done by signing in with the licensed Microsoft account on the MacBook Pro.
