I purchased Microsoft 365 subscription May 4, 2025. The subscription is unfunctional.

When I purchased Microsoft 365 I used the email address ******@vcsi1.com. March of 2026 I updated the email address to ******@sbvcsi.com. Updated the Microsoft 365 subscription account with new email address. For some odd reason it didn't update. Now I am unable to recovery all Word documents, etc.

I have spoken to the support team numerous times. Did the recovery verification form. No results.

It's a shame. The Microsoft 365 Home subscription code is [removed for security]

I noticed you rated my answer as unhelpful here, and I want to make sure I answered your question completely and accurately. Changing or updating your information like the email will not update and include the subscription and it is still tied to the account where you have first activated it after your purchase.

Hello, good day and thanks for your question. You will not be able to change the subscription's email from one account to another and the next option that you can look at is to cancel the existing subscription and subscribe again using the correct account. For the cancellation, you can go to https://account.microsoft.com/services/microsoft365/billing and try it from there or try to turn off the recurring billing at https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=2277073 and you can also follow the guided steps indicated from the link below.

The subscription and document access issue cannot be fixed from this channel because account ownership, email changes, and license assignment require direct verification and action by Microsoft support.

Based on the provided information and the available guidance:

    1. Confirm the correct account and subscription type
      • Microsoft 365 products are tied to the specific account (email) used when the subscription was activated.
      • For home subscriptions, the account is the same email used to buy or activate Microsoft 365 and to sign in at the account portal.
      • If the subscription was associated with one email and later changed, documents stored in OneDrive or tied to the original account may still be under the original identity if the update did not complete.
      • Use the guidance in “I forgot the account I use with Microsoft 365” to verify which account actually holds the active Microsoft 365 Home subscription and any associated services.
    2. Check whether the subscription is actually active and what it includes
      • Sign in to the Microsoft account services page (with each of the possible email addresses, one at a time) and verify:
        • That the Microsoft 365 Home (now Microsoft 365 Family/Personal equivalent) subscription is present.
        • That the expiry/renewal date is correct.
      • If the subscription is not visible under the updated email, it is likely still bound to the original email account.
    3. Understand what happens if the subscription is not active or not recognized
      • If Office cannot validate an active subscription, desktop apps will eventually go into reduced functionality mode: documents can be opened and printed, but not edited or newly created.
      • A yellow bar such as “ACCOUNT NOTICE. We've run into a problem with your Microsoft 365 subscription and need your help to fix it.” or “Unlicensed Product” indicates an activation or subscription recognition problem.
    4. Run the official activation troubleshooter (Windows 10 or later)
      • On the affected Windows PC where Office is installed, run the Microsoft Support and Recovery Assistant for Office activation issues and follow the prompts. This tool can detect and repair many subscription/activation problems.
      • If that does not resolve it, the documented next step is to:
        1. Deactivate the Office install from the account portal.
        2. Completely uninstall Office using the easy fix tool.
        3. Reinstall Office and sign in with the account that actually holds the license.
    5. If documents themselves seem “lost”
      • If documents were stored in OneDrive tied to the original email, they will not automatically move when changing to a new email/account. Access requires signing in with the original account that owns that OneDrive.
      • If access to that original account is blocked and the account recovery form has already been attempted multiple times without success, only Microsoft support can review or escalate further; this community and this channel cannot override recovery decisions or access data.
    6. Escalate through Microsoft 365 customer support
      • For home subscriptions (Microsoft 365 Home/Family/Personal/Basic/Premium), chat and call-back support from Microsoft 365 support experts is available.
      • Use the official “Microsoft 365 Customer Service and Support” entry point to:
        • Select the Microsoft 365 subscription product.
        • Choose options such as “Manage my subscription” or account/billing.
        • Request chat or a call back.
      • Clearly provide:
        • The original email and the updated email.
        • The subscription purchase date and renewal date.
        • The fact that the account recovery form has already been completed with no result.
        • That Word/Office shows subscription or activation errors and that documents are inaccessible.
    7. If the subscription is actually Microsoft 365 Basic
      • Microsoft 365 Basic does not include desktop Office apps; it only provides OneDrive storage and web/mobile Office apps.
      • If the previous plan had desktop apps and it ended, the installed apps will stop working or show activation/unlicensed messages.
      • In that case, to use desktop Word/Excel/PowerPoint again, upgrading to a plan that includes desktop apps (such as Microsoft 365 Personal or Family) is required.

Because this issue involves account identity, subscription ownership, and possible OneDrive data access, only Microsoft’s authenticated support channels can investigate and correct the account linkage or recover access to documents.
