MS Teams channels improperly being hidden when clicked

When selecting a channel to view in Microsoft Teams, sometimes Teams will change the hide/unhide setting of that channel unprompted. When I select it, it will change the name of the channel from normal to italic type, indicating that I'm viewing a hidden channel, and when I navigate away it hides. I'm not clicking anything to hide the channel, I'm simply clicking a normal, unhidden channel on the list, and its setting changes to hidden. This is frustrating because it definitionally only happens to channels that I'm using! I haven't been able to distinguish the circumstances that cause this to happen; it isn't every time I select a channel. How can I prevent this from happening?

Process recreation steps:

Use Teams in List view, with "Viewing chats, teams, and channels" setting on "Separate."
Select a visible, unhidden channel from the list by clicking directly on its name, not interacting with or mousing over the meatball menu icon.
The name of the channel changes to italic font, indicating that the channel has been hidden.
After navigating away, the channel hides, and must be unhidden manually.

Version information:

Windows 11
Teams desktop application version 26058.713.4529.5861 (and also some versions previous)

I too have this problem... Win11 user with version 26072.519.4556.7438... seems to only impact my Teams, both the client and web thin client. I have added the problem channel to "My Favorites" as a temporary "fix" so I can see content/updates. Very frustrating. April 10 Update:

Magically my "hidden" channel is now visible, both where it is supposed to be as well as under "My Favorites". Nothing done by me to resolve, so unclear as to how this was fixed.

Option 1: Add the channel to Favorites

Option 2: Enable “Recommend for everyone” for the channel

Note: This option is only available for Standard channels. It isn’t supported for Private or Shared channels.

Option 3: Clear the Microsoft Teams application cache

At this time, I don’t see any related advisories or incidents listed in the Microsoft 365 admin center. However, this does not necessarily mean the issue does not exist, as it may currently affect only a small number of users and hasn‘t yet been widely reported.

As the same issue is being experienced by several users in different tenants, the best next step is to reach out to your IT administrator to create a support ticket via Microsoft 365 Admin Center > Support > Help & Support.

A technical support engineer can perform a remote session to investigate the situation, verify the backend configurations, and run any necessary synchronization tools to resolve the problem. If the issue requires further attention, they can escalate it to a specialized team for deeper analysis.

Please note that this forum is a community-driven space where users share experiences and general guidance with one another. It isn't directly monitored by Microsoft product teams for formal investigation or issue tracking.

I would like to clarify that my role is limited to sharing public documentation, testing observations and general troubleshooting guidance. Under normal Microsoft Teams behavior, a channel is hidden only when the Hide option is deliberately selected from the channel’s menu. Once hidden, the channel no longer appears in the main list until it is manually shown again.

To reduce the impact and help keep channels visible, the following options may help stabilize the behavior:

Please make sure your operating system and Teams application are fully updated before proceeding with any troubleshooting steps. You can check for updates by going to More options (…) > Update Teams.

Option 1: Explicitly set the channel to Show

Even if a channel is currently accessible, it may still be flagged as hidden in the background. Explicitly setting it to Show ensures it remains visible.

Open Microsoft Teams.

Scroll to the bottom of the Chats and teams list.

Select See all your teams or See all your teams and channels.

Select the relevant team and choose See all channels.

Locate the affected channel and select Show next to it.

Option 2: Add the channel to Favorites as a workaround

Favoriting a channel keeps it easily accessible and reduces disruption if Teams temporarily reorganizes the channel list.

Locate the channel name.

Select More options next to the channel.

Choose Show in and then select Favorites.

Option 3: Repair or reset the Microsoft Teams client

Inconsistent local app data or cached state can sometimes cause unexpected interface behavior. Repairing or resetting the Teams app refreshes its local configuration.

@Ruby-N Found this page and I am running into the same issue at work. I randomly stumbled upon the workaround you listed to overide the shown status. However this is affecting every user of the channel, and is also re-setting.

Ie I go in, set it to shown, then an hour later it becomes hidden again.

If the goal is for the channel to stay visible for everyone, the most reliable approach is to have a team owner configure the channel so that it is automatically shown or recommended. This helps prevent the channel from being hidden again due to individual user preferences, which can be re-evaluated by the Teams client over time.

Open Microsoft Teams and navigate to the affected team > Manage team.

Select the channel, then choose More options and enable the option to automatically show this channel or mark it as recommended so members see it in their channel list.

Save the changes and ask members to restart Teams to allow the update to sync.

Option 2: Rule out client-side synchronization issues in the Teams desktop app

If the channel remains visible in Teams on the web but continues to revert to Hidden in the desktop application, this usually indicates a local client synchronization issue rather than a server-side configuration problem.

Sign in to Teams using the web version and confirm whether the channel remains visible there.

Sign out of the Teams desktop application completely.

Issues still persist. Channels that were never hidden by me, self-hide. I click Show and seconds later it reverts back to hidden.

Hello @Ruby-N , I am also having this issue with one of the channels on my Team as well as any individual that is in the Team. When attempting to add the channel to our favorites, it hides the channel instead. I was able to solve this issue for myself by clearing my cache and restarting Teams, but that solution did not work for another member of the team. As I am the owner of the channel, I attempted to follow your suggestion and Select "Recommend for everyone" but I do not have that option in my show more.

Thank you for looking for a workaround! I had already tried reinstalling etc, and have been using the "show" command to unhide the channels every time they improperly hide, but it doesn't prevent it happening again. Unfortunately, I use enough channels on a daily basis that adding them all to favorites as a workaround isn't practical-- but it could work for some people. I'll muddle through until Microsoft is able to fix the bug. Thank you for your time!

We are facing the same issue in my organization and we were informed by Microsoft it is a bug caused by a race condition and it will be fixed soon to the affected environments.

What we wanted to know now is when it will be fixed, since it's affecting us a lot, because we use channels to alert teams about new work orders. It's causing serious communication problrms for us.

This behavior matches how Teams treats previewed vs. shown/hidden channels, not a random hide/unhide bug.

In the current channel model, channels can be in three states for a team member:

Shown – permanently listed in the channel list.
Hidden – not listed, but can still send notifications depending on settings.
Previewed (italic) – temporarily visible while being previewed; if not explicitly set to Show, they disappear again when navigating away.

When a channel name appears in italics, that indicates a previewed channel. If the channel is in this state and is not explicitly changed to Show, it will revert to hidden after leaving it. This can look like Teams is “hiding” a channel that was just used, but it is actually reverting a previewed/hidden channel that was never promoted to shown.

To prevent channels from disappearing after clicking them:

In the Teams list, go to the team that contains the channel.
Select See all channels for that team.
In the list of channels, select Show next to each channel that should always stay visible.
- This moves the channel from hidden/previewed to shown, so it will no longer revert to hidden after navigating away.

Additional details from the current behavior:

When joining a team, only some channels are shown by default; others start as hidden and may appear in italics when previewed. To keep them, they must be explicitly set to Show from See all channels.
Channels can also be hidden manually via More options > Hide; hidden channels can be restored via hidden channels > Show or via See all channels.

By ensuring frequently used channels are set to Show (not just previewed), the channels will remain visible and will not auto-hide when switching away.
