For child accounts, Minecraft multiplayer can stay blocked even after changing some Xbox settings because multiple family and privacy controls must align, and changes can take time to propagate.
Use this checklist on the organizer (parent) account, not the child account:
- Confirm the account is in the Microsoft family
- Go to https://family.microsoft.com while signed in as the organizer.
- Make sure the Minecraft player’s account is listed as a child in the family group.
- Check Xbox privacy & online safety for the child
- As organizer, go to https://account.xbox.com/settings.
- Select the child’s profile.
- Under Privacy & online safety, ensure these are set to Allow for the child:
- You can join multiplayer games
- You can add friends and follow others
- (If playing with other platforms) You can join cross-network play
- Save the changes.
Note: In a similar case, the organizer saw Allow immediately, but the child still saw Block. It took over 24 hours for the change to apply before multiplayer started working.
- Sign out and back in everywhere
- On the child’s PC/Xbox:
- Sign out of the Xbox app, Microsoft Store, and Minecraft Launcher.
- Restart the device.
- Sign back in with the same child Microsoft account that is in the family group.
- Check for age-based restrictions
- If the account is still a child account by date of birth, it cannot convert itself to an adult to bypass restrictions. Only the organizer can relax the privacy/online safety settings; the child cannot override them.
- Wait for settings to propagate
- If everything is set to Allow on the organizer account and multiplayer is still disabled, wait up to 24 hours. In the referenced case, multiplayer only started working after this delay.
If, after 24 hours, multiplayer is still disabled even though the organizer sees Allow for “You can join multiplayer games,” contact Microsoft Support from the organizer account for further investigation.
