I have an issue with my Windows Precision 5680. When I open the camera app a white screen appears. I don't know why it started doing this. The only thing I can think of that may have caused this was my computer was very hot after coming back from a week long trip. It was plugged in before I left on the trip. I don't know when it started overheating. I think the heat may have ruined the camera sensor after researching.

Things I have tried already:

  • Updating and Uninstalling the camera drivers
  • Going into BIOS making sure the camera is enabled
  • Updating my computer

If a professional could please help solve this issue or just tell me my camera is messed up internally and see if it can be fixed if I were to send it in. Thank you!

    Hi,

Do you have any third-party antivirus software installed?

If not, it's possible the problem is a fault with the webcam's internal lens, a hardware failure.

Try with another software, like in the Start menu > Settings > Bluetooth devices > Cameras > see if the screen is also white. If so, select the camera options and check if the brightness is at maximum and the refresh rate is at 50Hz or 60Hz.

    Thanks

Based on the description and the screenshot, Windows detects the camera and the Camera app opens, but the preview is a solid white image. This typically indicates either a camera hardware failure (sensor or module) or a driver/firmware issue specific to that device.

From the available guidance, the remaining Windows-side checks are:

    1. Test the camera in another app
      • Open Start > Camera and confirm the preview is white.
      • Then test in another app that uses the camera (for example, a browser-based video call or another video app).
      • If the camera works in one app but not another, the issue lies with the app settings; if it is white in all apps, it is likely driver or hardware related.
    2. Run the Windows camera troubleshooter
    3. Check for Windows and driver updates
      • Go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for updates.
      • If View optional updates or Advanced options > Optional updates is available, look for any camera or system driver updates and install them.
      • Restart the PC after updates and test the camera again.
    4. Update the camera driver via Device Manager
      • Open Start > Device Manager.
      • Expand Cameras, right-click the integrated camera, and select Update driver.
      • Choose Search automatically for drivers and let Windows install any found driver, then restart and test.

If the camera still shows a solid white image in all apps after these steps, and the device is already enabled in BIOS as described, the behavior is consistent with a failing or failed camera module rather than a Windows configuration problem. In that case, the resolution would be hardware service: contacting the device manufacturer’s support to have the camera module inspected or replaced.
