My Microsoft 365 Personal Account renewed. I want to downgrade my subscription

My Microsoft Subscription just renewed. I would like to downgrade my service. I changed my future subscription for next year but I would like to change my current subscription that just renewed and get a partial refund for the difference.

Thank you,

    Hello Travis Wolfe

Please note that our forum is a public platform, and we will modify your question to hide your personal information in the description. Kindly ensure that you hide any personal or organizational information the next time you post an error or other details to protect personal data.

I can see that you want to downgrade your current Microsoft subscription

What type of Subscription do you currently have?

Since Q&A assist already provided information about refund, I would like to add information about subscription downgrading

After you have successfully cancelled your current plan, purchase the lower Microsoft 365 plan you want. This is the process for switching to a subscription with fewer features.

Your existing subscription might not change immediately, but it will automatically change to the new plan when the plan renews. You won't be charged for the new plan until it renews into that plan.

You can read more about downgrading subscription here: Switch between Microsoft 365 subscriptions

Feel free reply back to this post if you need further assistance, I'll be happy to help.

Changing the current Microsoft 365 Personal subscription term after it has just renewed and receiving a partial (prorated) refund depends on how and where the subscription was purchased and the country/region of the subscription.

    1. First, cancel the current Microsoft 365 subscription
      • Go to https://account.microsoft.com/services/microsoft365 and sign in with the same Microsoft account that was used to purchase the Microsoft 365 Personal subscription.
      • Under Services & subscriptions, find the Microsoft 365 subscription that just renewed and select Manage.
      • On the next page, select Cancel (it may appear as Upgrade or Cancel).
      • Follow the on‑screen steps to complete cancellation.
    2. Check refund eligibility
      • For Microsoft 365 Basic, Personal, Family, or Premium subscriptions purchased from Microsoft, refund eligibility is determined only after cancellation.
      • Not all cancellations result in a refund.
      • If the subscription was purchased through Google Play or the Apple App Store, cancellation and any refund must be handled through their support, not Microsoft.
    3. Prorated refund conditions by country
      • In the following countries, canceling a Microsoft 365 subscription may entitle the subscriber to a prorated refund (partial refund based on remaining term), depending on subscription length:
        • Any subscription length: Canada, Israel, Korea, Turkey
        • Subscriptions longer than 1 month and renewed: Denmark, Finland, Germany (purchases on or after March 1, 2022), Netherlands, Poland, Portugal
      • If the subscription is associated with one of these countries and meets the length/renewal conditions, a prorated refund may be applied automatically after cancellation.
    4. If no refund option appears
      • If, after cancellation, no refund is shown and the subscription continues until the end of the term, the account is not eligible for a refund under the current policy. The subscription can still be used until it expires, and the downgrade already set for the next term will take effect at the next renewal.
    5. If additional help is needed
      • If there are questions about eligibility or if the account is in one of the prorated-refund countries and no refund appears after cancellation, contact support via Contact Microsoft Support and provide subscription and billing details so they can review the account.
