I am trying to set up TEAMS on my desktop but all it tells me is that my account has been deactivated. I was using TEAMS about 5 years ago but had no need since.

Do you have the latest version of the New Teams application installed on your computer?

The version which you have used 5 years ago might be the Classic Teams application, which is now deactivated.

You can also try to sign in with your Microsoft account to Teams for Web application using your browser.

    Hi, I'm John!

When was the last time you were able to sign in to this account?

Microsoft may close or deactivate accounts if they’ve been inactive for about 2 years. Since you mentioned it’s been around 5 years, that could be the reason.

Also, are you trying to sign in on Teams using a personal Microsoft account or a work/school account?

If the Teams account was last used about five years ago and now shows as deactivated, the most likely causes are:

    1. The underlying Microsoft account is no longer active or can’t be signed into.
    2. The work/school tenant or license that previously provided Teams access is no longer available.

Use these steps based on the context provided:

    1. Confirm the Microsoft account still works
      • Go through the Microsoft account sign-in recovery steps:
        • If the password was forgotten, use the guidance in Reset your password.
        • If the password is known but no longer works, use the Sign-in Helper tool.
        • If the email/username is forgotten, follow Look up your Microsoft account.
        • If sign-in fails with messages like “account doesn’t exist” or the account hasn’t been used for more than two years, it may have been deleted and cannot be reopened.
      • All of these flows are described under I can't sign in to my Microsoft account.
    2. If the account is a work or school account
      • Teams access for work/school depends on an active Microsoft 365 license and configuration by the organization’s IT admin.
      • If the organization or its tenant has changed or the license was removed, Teams will not be available even if the sign-in still works.
      • In that case, contact the current organization’s IT admin to:
        • Confirm the account still exists in their tenant.
        • Confirm a Teams-enabled license (for example, Business Basic/Standard/Premium or an eligible Education plan) is assigned.
        • Turn Teams on if it is disabled for the plan (for example, A1 where Teams is off by default).
    3. If trying to use Teams Free with an email that was previously tied to an organization
      • If the email address is associated with an old work tenant, or is used both as a personal Microsoft account and a work account, sign-in can fail or route to the wrong profile.
      • Open a private/incognito browser window and go to https://teams.microsoft.com, then sign in explicitly with the desired account type (work/school vs personal).
      • If the address is tied to both a personal and a work account and Teams Free still cannot be created, follow the guidance to change or unlink the email from the Microsoft account, as described in Change the email address or phone number for your Microsoft account.
    4. If Teams for Education was used
      • Many permissions and access settings (including license assignment and whether Teams is enabled) are controlled by the institution’s IT admin.
      • If the school account or license was removed since last use, the admin must restore the account and/or license.

If none of the above resolves the issue and the account itself cannot be recovered or is no longer licensed for Teams, a new Teams environment will be needed (for example, via a new personal Microsoft account for Teams Free, or via a current organization with an active Teams-enabled Microsoft 365 subscription).
