    Hi Chelse Murray,

First, make sure your PC meets the minimum system requirements for Windows 11 Pro, including TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot enabled in BIOS. Next, check that your current Windows version is fully updated before starting the upgrade, as missing updates can cause installation errors. If you’re installing from the Microsoft Store or your subscription portal, try downloading the ISO directly from the official Microsoft site and running the setup manually.

When running the installer, choose “Upgrade” if you want to keep your files and apps, or “Custom” if you prefer a clean installation. If the error persists, disconnect any unnecessary peripherals (USB drives, external devices) and temporarily disable third‑party antivirus software, as these can interfere with the setup. Also, ensure you have enough free disk space, at least 20 GB is recommended.

If you continue to see “Windows install failed,” check the installation logs located in C:\Windows\Panther for more details, or run the Windows Update Troubleshooter from Settings > System > Troubleshoot. In some cases, creating installation media with the Media Creation Tool and booting from it resolves stubborn errors.

In short, verify requirements, update your current system, use the ISO or Media Creation Tool, and check logs if needed. I hope this helps you get Windows 11 Pro installed successfully. If you find this answer helpful, please consider clicking Accept Answer so others can benefit too.

    Jason.

"Windows install failed" is a generic message that usually needs a specific error code to diagnose.

Follow these steps on the Windows 11 Pro device:

    1. Get the exact error code
      • Select Start > Settings > Windows Update.
      • Select Update history.
      • Find the failed Windows installation/feature update entry and note the error code (for example, 0x80070070, 0x800F0922, etc.). Different codes have different fixes.
    2. Make sure the device is ready for Windows 11
      • In Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, select Check for updates.
      • Install all important updates for the current Windows version, restart, then check again.
      • When Windows 11 Pro is validated for the device, Windows Update will show that Windows 11 is ready with a Download and install option.
    3. Apply common fixes based on typical errors Once the error code is known from Update history, compare it to these common cases:
      • Not enough disk space (0x80070070 – 0x50011 / 0x50012 / 0x60000)
Free space on the system drive, then retry the installation. See the tips in Tips to free up drive space on your PC.
      • PC does not meet requirements (0xC1900200 – 0x20008 / 0xC1900202 – 0x20008)
The device may not meet Windows 11 minimum requirements. Check the hardware against the Windows 11 specifications.
      • Network / update server issues (0x800F0922)
If using a VPN, disconnect it and turn off any VPN software, then retry. This error can also be caused by insufficient space in the System Reserved partition.
      • Driver or software compatibility (0x800F0923, 0xC1900101-0x20017 / 0x30017)
A driver or software may be blocking the upgrade. Remove or disable third‑party antivirus/antispyware, disconnect all non‑essential peripherals (leave only mouse, keyboard, display), then retry. For 0x800F0923, contact Microsoft support for help.
      • Background process interference (0x8007042B-0x4000D, 0x800700B7-0x2000A)
A background app or service is interrupting setup. Perform a clean boot as described in How to perform a clean boot in Windows, then run the upgrade again.
      • Disk/partition issues (0x80300024, 0x80070002 0x20009)
Ensure the disk and partition meet Windows requirements. If there are extra disks that are not the Windows target disk, temporarily remove or disconnect them and retry.
    4. Retry the Windows 11 Pro installation
      • After applying the relevant fix for the error code, go back to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates, then use Download and install for Windows 11 Pro when offered.
    5. If the error persists
      • Use the error code and follow the guidance in Get help with Windows upgrade and installation errors for Windows 11.
      • If still failing after applying the documented steps for that code, contact Microsoft support with the exact error code and any log details.
