Renaming an active group chat when the original organizer is no longer with the agency

4 years ago, a weekly meeting was started, shared and reoccurring ever since. We now want to rename the chat / meeting, but the original organizer is no longer with the agency. I know we can start a new meeting / chat but we don't want to lose the historical information and date shared. Is there a way to take over or be added as an organizer for editing rights?

    Dear @Marcus,

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Q&A forum. I am happy to assist you.

Regarding your question: attendees can rename the meeting on their own Outlook calendar (and save it with Ctrl + S). However, this change only applies to their personal view. It will not update the meeting name for other participants.

As a workaround, you may sign in with the admin account and do the following:

    1. Go to Microsoft 365 admin center > Users > Active users.
    2. Locate the account that originally created the meeting.
    3. Reset the password.

    User's image

Note: If the account has been deleted, please check under Deleted users.

Then use that account with to sign in to Teams > Calendar > select the meeting > Edit

    User's image

    And change the meeting name.

Note: If the meeting was created using Meet Now (not a scheduled meeting), the meeting name cannot be changed.

I hope this information is helpful. If you need any further assistance, please feel free to reach out. I am here to help. Thank you very much for your understanding and cooperation.

In Microsoft Teams, if the original organizer of a group chat is no longer with the agency, there is no direct way to transfer ownership of the chat or rename it. The chat is tied to the original organizer's account, and if they are not available, you cannot edit the chat settings or rename it.

The recommended approach is to create a new group chat or meeting. However, as you mentioned, this would result in losing the historical information and shared dates. Unfortunately, Microsoft Teams does not currently support transferring ownership or editing rights for an existing chat when the original organizer is unavailable.

You may want to consider exporting the chat history for reference before starting a new chat or meeting, but this will not allow you to retain the original chat's name or settings.
