    Hi Deanna,

I think there is a bit of confusion on your specific issue.

Are you referring to a specific app that's running in Windows?

Azure Maps isn't built into Windows. There may be an app that uses Azure Maps that has been installed into your Windows environment, but there is no such app built into Windows. There is a maps app that was built into Windows in the past (simply called map app). That app has recently been retired and doesn't function in the latest Windows 11 updates.

If you go into Settings -> Privacy & security -> Location you will be able to see a list of all apps installed on your computer that have access to the location information from your computer. You will find there are several different settings related to sharing your location. In particular there is an "Allow location override" option that when turned on would most likely ignore your default location settings in some instances.

Are you referring to the Bing Maps consumer site bing.com/maps?

Some Windows applications may redirect you to the Bing Maps consumer site to display maps. In particular, if you have that retired app still installed it does this redirect I believe. Several other Windows features do this too. The Bing Maps consumer site is a website and does not have access to your local Windows settings. When the Bing Maps site initially loads it centers the map on your approximate location based on IP address. This is usually accurate to the city level. If you press the "My Location" button under directions, it will use the geolocation API built into the browser which uses several different methods to get your location (many computers and nearly all mobile phones have a GPS chip in them which would be used).

Note that the Microsoft Learn forums are primarily for developer platforms and services. Azure Maps is a cloud service from Microsoft and not an app built into Windows. The Azure Maps developer platform has a couple of features for showing your location on a map, but that simply uses the location information provided by the browser which is generally provided by the GPS sensor in the computer/phone.

It sounds like your question is specific to a feature or app within Windows which is a consumer product not supported in these forums. You will likely find the following consumer forums more productive: https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/category/Windows

    Hello Deanna Rayment,

Welcome to Microsoft Q&A and Thank you for reaching out.

I understand that you're having trouble with Azure Maps showing the wrong default location. While Azure Maps is generally managed through the Azure portal, it seems like you're looking to modify or remove the map settings.

    Key clarification,

Azure Maps is not installed on your computer and cannot be “removed” like a local application. Azure Maps is a cloud-based mapping service that is used by applications and websites (for example: web apps, Power BI reports, or custom applications).

If you’re seeing an incorrect default location, it is almost always caused by:

    Your device location settings

    Browser permissions or cached data

VPN / proxy / network routing

Or the application configuration that uses Azure Maps

How to fix the wrong default location

    1. Check your device (Windows) location settings

    If you’re using Windows:

    1. Go to Settings → Privacy & security → Location
    2. Make sure Location services are turned ON
    3. Click Default location
    4. Set your correct city/location
    5. Restart the browser or app where the map appears
    6. Clear browser location permissions and cache

If this happens in a browser (Edge or Chrome):

    Reset location permissions

    Open Browser Settings

Go to Privacy & Security → Site settings → Location

Remove or reset permissions for the affected website

    Clear cache

    • Clear cached images/files
    • Close and reopen the browser
    1. Check VPN, proxy, or corporate network

    If you’re using:

    A VPN

    A proxy

    A corporate/work network

These can cause Azure Maps to resolve your location incorrectly. Try temporarily disabling them and refresh the page.

If this is coming from a specific application

Azure Maps behavior is controlled by the application that uses it, not by Azure Maps itself.

    Examples:

    Power BI reports

    Web portals

    Custom or internal business apps

    In this case:

    • The default location is likely hard-coded or configured in the app
    • You’ll need to update the app’s configuration or contact the app owner

About deleting Azure Maps in the Azure portal

Deleting an Azure Maps account in the Azure portal:

    Only removes the cloud resource

Does not change locations shown on your computer

Will not affect apps unless they explicitly depend on that account

This is usually not required to fix incorrect map locations.

I Hope this helps. Do let me know if you have any further queries.

    Thank you!
