Hello Dylan Chen, welcome to Microsoft Q&A forum.
On modern Surface laptops running Windows 11, closing the lid does not fully power the device off. These systems use Modern Standby (S0 low‑power idle) instead of the older S3 sleep model. That means the device may briefly wake in the background for maintenance tasks or drivers, even when the lid is closed.
A small battery drop overnight can be normal, but draining most or all of the battery by morning is not expected. That usually means the device isn’t reaching a deep idle state and is being woken repeatedly.
Here are a few things worth checking:
- Make sure Windows and Surface firmware are fully up to date through Windows Update and the Surface app. Firmware issues are a common cause.
- Disconnect everything before closing the lid, including USB‑C hubs, monitors, dongles, or receivers, as these can keep the system awake.
- Review background app permissions and set anything non‑essential to Power optimized or Never run in background.
- Enable Battery Saver to further reduce background activity while on battery.
- Generate a battery report to confirm what’s happening overnight. Open an elevated PowerShell window and run:
powercfg /batteryreport Then review the report to see battery usage while the lid was closed.
If you need the battery to last for multiple days without charging, a full shutdown is currently the most reliable option on Modern Standby devices.
