Outlook sign-in keeps returning error - You've tried to sign in too many times with an incorrect account or password.

Outlook is blocking signing in (on the same device and mobile provider I use for data everyday), and Microsoft won't provide support over the phone; additionally, I can't use the virtual agent as it requires signing in. The account is for personal use.

The error message I receive is "You've tried to sign in too many times with an incorrect account or password," despite using the correct account and password every time. Attempted on mobile web and desktop web (Windows and Linux) with multiple different browsers. I also tried installing the app for Android on my phone, but had the same issue.

Troubleshooting attempted:

  • Changed password twice, same issue
  • Filled out recovery form and received an email approving me and asking me to change my password again, same issue; now I can't request another password
  • Cleared cache/history/cookies in browser, same issue
  • Power cycled devices, same issue
  • Attempted on both mobile data and home internet (cable 100M up/ 10M down, ethernet), same issue
  • No VPNs are in use

When checking my account status on the support page multiple times, I receive the following message:

"No problems found

We couldn't find any issues or problems with the Microsoft account details you entered.

If you need help with a work or school account password, click here. "

If there are no problems found, why can't I access my account? I've seen other complaints here today regarding this, as many more on Reddit.

Thank you for any assistance you can provide.

Hi Keegan Crossley, thanks for posting here in Microsoft sorry to hear that, since you've already tried the usual recovery steps and confirmed your account status shows no problems, one alternative is to try signing in via Outlook's desktop app, not the browser or mobile app, which sometimes bypasses web-based lockouts.

Also, check if two-factor authentication (2FA) is enabled and causing a silent block to try disabling it temporarily via recovery options if possible, to do this simply go to https://account.microsoft.com/security then sign in, if possible, using your credentials then under “Advanced security options”, look for Two-step verification, If enabled, click “Turn off” and follow the prompts, Try signing in again after disabling.

I hope this helps you, let me know how it goes.

It sounds like you're experiencing a frustrating issue with signing into your Outlook account. The error message "You've tried to sign in too many times with an incorrect account or password" typically indicates that the system has temporarily locked your account due to multiple failed sign-in attempts. Here are some steps you can take to resolve this issue:

    1. Wait for a While: Sometimes, accounts are temporarily locked after several failed attempts. Waiting for a few hours before trying again might help.
    2. Check for Account Recovery Options: Since you've already attempted to change your password, ensure that you have access to the recovery options associated with your account. If you receive an email approving your recovery request, follow the instructions carefully.
    3. Use a Different Device or Network: Although you've tried multiple devices and networks, sometimes using a completely different device (like a friend's or a public computer) can bypass any local issues.
    4. Contact Microsoft Support: Since you mentioned that phone support is unavailable, you might want to try reaching out through their online support channels or community forums. They may have additional insights or be able to assist you further.
    5. Check for Account Status: Ensure that your account is not flagged for any suspicious activity. You can check this on the Microsoft account security page.
    6. Clear Browser Data Again: Although you've cleared cache and cookies, ensure that you also clear any saved passwords or autofill data in your browser settings.

If none of these steps work, it might be worth considering creating a new account if you cannot regain access to your current one.
