    Hi Lou6116,

Welcome to Microsoft 7 answers Forum!

    1.      Click on Remote Desktop Connection in the Start.

    2.      Click on Options.

    3.      Click on Advanced tab.

    4.      Click on Settings under “Connect it from anywhere”.

    5.      Click “Automatically Detect RD gateway Server Settings”.

    6.      Click OK.

You may also try the steps below:

**1.**Go to Control Panel>System>Advanced System Settings

    2. Go to Remote tab.

    3. Under Remote Assistance, put a check mark on Allow Remote Assistance connections to this computer

Note: This automatically adds Remote Desktop exception in Windows Firewall.

    4. Click on Advanced...

Click this bar to view the full image.

    5. Put a check mark on Allow this computer to be controlled remotely.

    6. Click on OK.

Note: This automatically adds Remote Assistance exception in Windows Firewall.

Let me know if this worked.

Had the same problem as OP.

I repair computers for a living and have setup remote desktop for many people both on a lan and well as over the internet.  After check all the setting, firewall ip name etc. here is what it turned out to be for one of my customers.

When the customers son installed Windows 7 Pro he used the name of Bill, he went ahead and installed all the drivers, programs etc that his dad wanted.  When Bill brought the computer over to dad house and started it up dad wanted the user name changed to John. So instead of creating a new user of John they just changed the user name from Bill to John.  There is only 1 user on this computer.

When you connect to this computer with remote desktop the default name is John, all password authentication fails for John. What he has to do is; click on other user type in Bill enter the password and presto it works.

Thanks for this solution Ross. As a note to others, if you have changed the name and forgotten what the old one was (like me), then you can navigate to

    1. ****Go to Control Panel>System>Advanced System Settings
    2. Remote Tab
    3. Click Select Users
    4. Underneath the textbox you should see something that says - 'blank' already has access

According to this blog entry on the Remote Desktop Services blog Remote Desktop [RDC] login credentials are stored locally on the RDC client. So have you tried to delete the saved login ID and password then retry the connection?

Remember the RDC login ID and password are for an account on the RDC host computer even though they are stored on the RDC client computer.
