All Outlook 2024 email going to Trash instead of Inbox

All my email suddenly started going to the Trash folder.
I do not have any Rules set up - nothing shows there.

I clicked on an email inviting me to a party from what appeared to be a cousin. Only lately discovered it was a phish.

I have changed my Microsoft password, but haven't changed anything in Outlook 2024 LTSC.

Outlook still works - I have sent several messages, but they all go to Trash.

I moved some legitimate messages from Trash back to Inbox.

How do I fix this problem?

    SOLVED

Thank you Alice-N for your post, but I seemed to have solved the problem before you responded. It also appears that Safari on an iPad does not play well with Q&A.

The problem was not in Outlook - it was clean - no rules or filters.
I used AT&T's browser email and discovered a filter that moved everything to Trash where the subject line did NOT contain 'happy'. I did not create that filter.

I removed the filter and repaired Outlook (just to be sure). Outlook now working properly. Apparently the browser filter took effect before Outlook received anything.

    Alice-N

Could you please expand your instruction:
'Open Deleted Items > select a message that landed there > Home tab > Ignore > Stop Ignoring Conversation.' ?

I selected a message in Deleted Items, clicked on Home tab, but could not find any form of 'Ignore' option.

The only thing with 'Ignore' showed up after right-clicking on the message line in the Trash folder.

Using Microsoft Office LTSC Professional Plus 2024

    Dear George Sinkinson

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Q&A forum. I understand you are having problem with Outlook 2024 where new emails are going to Trash/Deleted Items instead of Inbox. I am happy to assist you. Does the same “Inbox > Deleted Items” behavior happen when you sign in on the web, or only in Outlook 2024 desktop?

Please also try these steps if you have tried the AI steps but do not work:

    • Stop “Ignore Conversation” (can force future replies to Deleted Items)
      • Open Deleted Items > select a message that landed there > Home tab > Ignore > Stop Ignoring Conversation.
      • If many threads are affected, close Outlook and run: Outlook.exe /CleanConvOnGoingActions
    • Confirm “Conversation Clean Up” wasn’t used
      • Conversation Clean Up moves redundant messages in a conversation to Deleted Items.
    • Quick isolation: start Outlook without add-ins
      • Close Outlook > Run: Outlook.exe /safe
      • If mail stops going to Deleted Items in Safe Mode, an add-in/customization is likely involved.
    • Hard reset hidden/corrupted rules
      • Close Outlook > Run: Outlook.exe /cleanrules
      • Note: This deletes client + server rules, and affects all mailboxes in the Outlook profile.
    • Reset views/folder pane
      • Run: Outlook.exe /cleanviews and/or Outlook.exe /resetnavpane

Please tell me how it goes. If the problem persists, please don’t hesitate to reply to this thread and I will be happy to help. Have a lovely day!

The behavior is almost always caused by a rule or junk/spam handling moving messages automatically, even if nothing obvious shows in Outlook’s Rules UI.

Work through these steps in order:

    1. Check server-side rules (Inbox/Sweep rules) These rules run on the server and affect Outlook 2024 even if Outlook’s own Rules list looks empty.
    • If the account is Outlook.com / Microsoft 365:
      1. Sign in to your mailbox in a browser (Outlook.com or Outlook on the web).
      2. Go to Settings > Mail (or Options).
      3. In the left pane, open Inbox and sweep rules.
      4. Look for any rule that:
        • Moves messages to Deleted Items, Trash, or any other folder, or
        • Deletes messages.
      5. Uncheck or delete any such rule.
      6. If any rule moves messages, also check the target folder (Trash/Deleted Items) for misfiled mail.
This follows the same pattern as described for Mail for Windows 10, where server rules still apply even though the client itself does not manage rules directly.
    1. Check Junk/Spam handling and Safe Senders If messages are being treated as junk, they may be redirected or deleted.
    • In Outlook.com / Outlook on the web:
      1. Select Settings > Mail > Junk email.
      2. Under Safe senders and domains, add any important senders or domains that should never be treated as junk.
      3. Review Blocked senders and domains and remove any legitimate senders.
Messages from addresses or domains on the safe senders list will not be moved to Junk, which can help prevent over-aggressive filtering after a phishing incident.
    1. Verify no hidden rule is diverting mail The Q&A context shows that a “well hidden” rule can divert all new mail to another folder (for example, RSS Feeds). The same can happen with Trash/Deleted Items.
    • In Outlook desktop (Classic/2024):
      1. Go to Home > Rules > Manage Rules & Alerts.
      2. Carefully review all rules for any condition like “apply to all messages” with an action that moves or deletes mail.
      3. Temporarily uncheck all rules and test by sending yourself a message.
      4. If mail now goes to Inbox, re-enable rules one by one to find the culprit.
    1. Check Junk Email and other folders Because phishing and junk handling can misclassify messages:
    • Check the Junk Email folder and Trash/Deleted Items for legitimate messages.
    • If you find good messages in Junk, mark them as Not junk so future mail from those senders is delivered correctly.
    1. If the problem persists If no rules are visible and mail still goes to Trash, use Outlook.com/Outlook on the web support and community options to have the account checked for hidden or corrupted rules or compromised settings:
    • Use the in-product Help in Outlook.com and, if needed, the Still need help? path to contact support.

Also keep the Microsoft account secured (strong password, sign-in history review, and multi-factor authentication) using the Recent activity page if there is any concern the account was compromised by the phishing mail.
