Can't sign in to microsoft 365 desktop apps

Consistently get the following message: "We couldn't find a work or school account with that email address."

365 through the browser works fine. I've uninstalled/re-installed about 4 times. Tech support at work and a Geek squad consultation provided no additional insight.

The one thing that was done prior to installing 365 was the office apps were signed into using my work account. I've done what I could to logout and remove any references from this PC, but perhaps something is leftover restricting access on my personal account

    Hello,

    Just want to make sure, your personal account does have an active Microsoft 365 personal or family plan, right?

    If so, this is what you need to do. Uninstall your Microsoft 365 from Settings > Apps > Installed Apps.

    Then go through this list -

    Can you go to your Windows Settings > Accounts > Access Work or School (note, it is the briefcase icon, not the little person icon). Then see if the organization email address is still listed? If so, click on it and then disconnect it.

    ==================

    Next, type contro panel in the search on the taskbar to launch it, then go to Credential Manager > Windows credential tab, look for anything referencing the organization account, right click and delete all that is found.

    ===============

    Hold down Windows + R keys, copy and paste the following path into the run box (one at a time please), and press enter to launch the folder. When it is launched, delete everything in the folder. If you run into any sub folder that will not allow you to delete, go into that sub folder, and delete from within.

    %LocalAppData%\Packages\MSTeams_8wekyb3d8bbwe

    %LocalAppData%\Packages\Microsoft.AAD.BrokerPlugin_cw5n1h2txyewy

    %LocalAppData%\Microsoft\OneAuth

    %LocalAppData%\Microsoft\TokenBroker

    %LocalAppData%\Microsoft\IdentityCache

    ========================= Restart the computer after that.

    Then use this installation instruction, and sign in, see if it helps. Please go to https://www.office.com

    Sign into the Microsoft account you used for the subscription. Click on Apps on the left.

    Then on the upper right, click on "Install apps". This will now download the installer file. Once downloaded, click on the file to install. It will install the Desktop version of the apps for you then.

    I have the opposite problem. I am using an email where I need to say 'Personal Account Created By You' and NOT 'Work or School Account'. Today, March 21, 2026. My desktop Office Products (Word, OneNote, etc.) all said I needed to sign in again when they worked fine yesterday. I am trying to use the desktop versions of Word, Excel, OneNote, PowerPoint, Teams, etc. on Windows 11. Today March 21, 2026, the Microsoft Account tied to the Windows 11 on my computer as well as my Office products installed on that computer all tell me I need to sign in again or I need to verify my account. My account is an email address where I have to say 'Personal Account Created by You' and not 'Work or School Account'. 2026-03-21-WorkSchoolAccount-PersonalAccountCreatedByYou

    When I choose 'Personal Account Created by You' today, March 21, 2026, I now get 2026-03-21-Error

    There is nothing wrong with my network connection. Chrome and non Office Apps work just fine. Windows Network Debugger returns no errors. Rebooting and re-installing the Office products doesn't help. I have no problems when I login into the web version of https://account.microsoft.com/ nor if I try the web versions of Office.

    Accepted. Really appreciated EmilyS726's problem solving skills and careful instructions. This one took many steps to solve, but there was always a next step with clear instructions to follow.
